This course introduces students to the acting approach of Stella Adler, one of the most influential acting teachers of the 20th century. Students will explore Adler’s belief that acting begins with imagination, strong choices, and a deep understanding of the character’s world. Rather than forcing emotion or relying only on personal memory, students will learn how to build a character through given circumstances, script analysis, research, action, and stakes.
Through discussion and practical exercises, students will examine how actors use imagination to step into lives different from their own. The course encourages students to think like creative artists by asking: Who is this character? What world do they live in? What do they want? What is stopping them? What choice can I make that brings the scene to life?
By the end of the lesson, students should understand that Adler’s technique is not about “acting emotional,” but about creating truthful behavior through preparation, imagination, and purposeful action.
